A place to step away, within the office

An open-plan office brings people together. Questions can move across a desk, ideas can become conversations, and the team stays connected throughout the day. But a working day also includes moments that need a different setting: a client call, a video meeting or a piece of work that deserves someone’s full attention.

In this Sydney office, two FocusPod Solo phone booths add that setting within the existing workspace. Positioned side by side, they create two enclosed places for individual work while keeping the shared office close at hand. The addition gives people another way to use the space as their day changes.

Two phone booths, two independent workspaces

The defining detail is the pair. Each FocusPod Solo is a separate single-person workspace, so two colleagues can step into their own pods at the same time. One might be joining a video call while the other works through a task that benefits from separation from the surrounding activity.

That is a useful distinction when planning an open-plan office. A larger meeting pod brings people together around one conversation. Two individual phone booths provide capacity for two separate activities. Here, the side-by-side arrangement makes that choice part of the office layout.

A modern addition to a room with character

The setting gives this installation its own identity. Tall arched windows, substantial timber frames and warm flooring sit alongside pale walls and full-height curtains. The two white pods introduce a clean, contemporary shape into a room with strong architectural detail.

Their glass fronts and rear panels keep the windows and surrounding interior visible through the enclosures. The timber remains part of the view, even from inside. With the doors closed, each pod has a clear boundary; visually, both still belong to the larger room.

Inside the FocusPod Solo

Each pod is fitted with a white desk and an upholstered stool, with grey interior panels, overhead lighting and accessible power. It is a straightforward arrangement for one person to settle in with a laptop or take a call.

The open-door photograph shows the two workspaces together and the way each desk sits within the enclosure. The close-up reveals the individual setup. These are compact additions with a specific role: giving everyday calls and focused work a dedicated place alongside the shared workspace.

Planning phone booths for your open-plan office

Start with the activities you need to accommodate and how often they happen at the same time. If several people regularly join separate calls, the number of individual spaces matters as much as the size of each pod. If the priority is face-to-face discussion, consider a pod designed for people to meet together.

Next, look at where those spaces will sit. Allow for the doors to open, keep surrounding walkways clear and consider access to power. The best position makes the pods easy to use as part of the working day.

This Sydney installation shows how a pair of Solo pods can add individual workspaces while keeping the character of an existing office in view. Planning a similar space?

Plan for the moments that happen together

Think about how many people need an individual call space at the same time. Then check the pod positions, door swings, power access and circulation so the new workspaces fit naturally into the office.
